Prime Minister David Cameron with Hugh Grant

The iconic Midland Hotel totally refurbished its French restaurant and Living Ventures had a parallel aim to get a star for their all new ‘Manchester House’!

What a laudable and honourable thing it is to quest for recognition for the charming, warm and ambient city that is Manchester. Both Living Ventures & The Midland have bough chesterfield sofas from our factory and we watched with avid interest and support (for both) from the comfort of our luxury leather sofas.

We often see TV programmes these days telling us about the ‘powerhouse’ that is the South East. The fact that LONDON leads the way in every calling. But cities like Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Edinburgh and primarily Manchester have worked and striven to be 21st century cosmopolitan cities. The fantastic efforts that have been made by councils, and surely mean that some recognition should be forthcoming.  Hey even the BBC have come here to live! We don’t need a Michelin Star but we sure deserve one! If Michelin don’t get that…. then may be it’s they who are out of step with the times.

Our chesterfields can be seem in the Midland Suite that was used by Prime Minister – David Cameron during the Tory Conference. He needed something special to sit on during his long meetings!

Chesterfield and Beyond

The Chesterfield sofa conjures images of formally attired gentlemen sequestered in a dark paneled study, sipping brandy and smoking cigars. Throughout history the Chesterfield sofa has come to represent many things to different people. The Victorian era saw the Chesterfield as the key piece in living rooms, where gentlemen relaxed while their wives sat in chairs crafting needlepoint. Since the 19th century, it has been linked with Freudian psychoanalysis, as Sigmund Freud originally used a sofa during his hypnosis sessions with patients. Flash forward two centuries and find yourself seated in a sumptuous red leather Chesterfield in a dark corner of a local coffeehouse or wine bar.
Throughout the years, Chesterfield sofas have graced the palaces of royalty, prominent business offices, hotels, restaurants, gentleman’s clubs and luxurious private homes. Today the Chesterfield is synonymous with elegance and class in interiors all over the world, of every architectural and decorating style. Regardless of what it represents to many, the Chesterfield steadfastly remains the sofa that embodies the perfect blend of comfort and sophistication.
The Chesterfield sofa, however, has a somewhat uncertain history. This icon of the furniture world is widely thought to have been commissioned by, and consequently named in honor of, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, Philip Dormer Stanhope, in the 18th century. Aside from being a much-admired politician and writer, the suave Earl was a known trendsetter. When the Earl requested a cabinetmaker to construct a piece of furniture that would allow a gentleman to sit upright in the utmost of comfort, thus was the inception of the Chesterfield sofa with its characteristic deep buttoned upholstery, rolled arms, equal back and arm height and nail head trim. There has never been any solid confirmation of this noble beginning.

These days Chesterfield sofas are everywhere, mixed with modern or traditional furnishings, covered in leather or the union jack, lets just call it like it is… Chesterfield’s are once again trendy.  The Lytham Sofa from Lee Jofa is a nod to the Chesterfield with its deep button back but it’s been streamlined for todays living.  The striking thing about this piece is the use of curves to define its overall shape. First there is the curve from the middle out to each end. Then there is the gentle slope of the back rest as it flows down into the
arms, certainly a departure from the even height of the back and arm of the Chesterfield.  The arms of the sofa embrace curvature thereby supporting the overall design theme.

Living Room Inspiration, Too Good to Pass Up

Now that we have the star of the show, I have enjoyed playing around with a mood board for inspiration for the living room that works around our new chesterfield sofa.

These mood boards are just that – inspiration. Besides the sofa and a couple of kudo horns from here in South Africa, we don’t own anything else shown on the board. So don’t be surprised if the final result isn’t an exact match.

You may have noticed that I am drawn towards decorating with blues, greens, and grays – and somehow a Michelle Armas painting seems to find it’s way in to every mood board so far. Seriously, that woman is talented! I thought this painting was a great choice for color inspiration but, sadly, it looks like it is no longer available.

Half of the living room with be torn down in the midst of our renovation but we do plan to update the fireplace and built-ins with a few DIY projects. Our list includes:

To – Do:
Scrape popcorn ceilings
Install new hardwood flooring
Paint (or stain) brick fireplace (more on this later!)
Build wooden shelves for built-ins and remove glass front doors.
Repaint walls, ceiling, built-ins, trim and doors
Replace ceiling fan
Replace mantel
Bring in art, curtains, etc.

I love the way this room is heading but I’m a little stumped on what to do with our tall brick fireplace. I’m getting my thoughts together and will be asking for your advice soon!

Too Good to Pass Up

Y’all! We bought a sofa this weekend! Sight unseen, never sat on, clear across the world but we I just fell in love over a computer screen!

chesterfield sofa

I wasn’t even considering a sofa like this for our living room. I have always loved chesterfields (even more after admiring my friend, Jenn’s, new addition!) but never thought I could afford one or be lucky enough to run across one. But this past week, I found a Craigslist ad for this sexy, tufted, extra large, sofa that has now changed all of my plans! It’s in brand new condition, rarely used, and (in my opinion) will only get better with age!

I know finding a great deal on Craigslist is nothing new, but Texarkana’s Craigslist NEVER has anything good! So when I saw this Pottery Barn Grand Chesterfield Sofa pop up for almost half price, I had to act quick!! Our lovely Aunt Nancy went to scope it out, did all the negotiating for us and he’ll even be waiting for us in our living room when we get home (thanks again, Nancy)! I’m so in love and can’t wait to see this piece in person! Here is some inspiration photos of some sexy chesterfields strutting their stuff!

My brain is filled with ideas for our living room mood board that now includes this sofa! Check back soon to see how he fits in!
Tell me about your Craigslist surprises!  Anyone have a chesterfield they love? Or bought a couch before without seeing or sitting on it?

The Cheslea flagship model

Chelsea chesterfield sofa

The Chelsea chesterfield sofa is one of the most stunning examples of a modern contemporary styled sofa using all of the virtues, heritage and consistency of the Chesterfield mixed with a new sophisticated and free styling idiom of the modern age. This gorgeous sofa incorporates sleek elegance, brash beauty and modern no nonsense class with it’s flared arms, plain front border and choice of cushion seats. The Chelsea is a truly exquisite sofa from Chesterfield Lounge. Having wider flared arms means that this beauty offers generous curves along the back and arms giving a rounded curved effect to the sofa. It sits very comfortably and can be bespoken to your own requirements.

Similar in styling to the Alexander chesterfield sofa, the Chelsea’s main difference is a more generous seating depth. The seating is made to an extra depth of 100cm giving a deep relaxed and comfortable seat, which especially suits taller and larger people. Leather piping wins here against the usual studding but this can be altered and added to if you so desire.

Samuel chesterfield chair

The large 4 seater is 249cm wide, the 3 seater is 232cm wide and the chair is 102cm wide. We also have a smaller occasi

onal chair called the Samuel that complements the the style of this model. The

Samuel chesterfield chair is much narrower and compact, measuring 74cm wide, 82cm deep and 90cm high.  Both the Cheslea sofa and the Samuel chair are shown in the photo in Devil Arabica Deluxe Leather and look stunning together. These models are also available in many different leather and fabric colours.

Chesterfield Lounge can Tailor make this model (or any of our models) you’re your personal measurement and requirement to fit your roomset.

The Chelsea is meticulously constructed using hardwood frames screwed, glued and dowelled. Both seat platform and inside back are supported by metal serpentine springs. Pocket sprung seats and fibre filled cushions complete the outstanding specification. This model is truly magnificent.

Great Tips on Ordering a Chesterfield Sofa

There is nothing like a Chesterfield sofa when it comes to adding style and elegance to your home. It’s a traditional, classic design. It can be an eye-catching piece of furniture in your room or it can simply blend in with the rest of your furnishings. For most homes, though, leather Chesterfield sofas are the highlight of the room. These are stunning pieces of furniture with excellent craftsmanship and design.

When choosing between the many styles of leather Chesterfield sofas, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, there is a tremendous selection of leather available for these sofas. You aren’t just limited to browns and blacks. Leather Chesterfield sofas can be found in virtually every shade in the rainbow. In addition, you may want to consider a leather patchwork sofa. These are becoming very popular nowadays and can really add something special to your home.

Second, you will have to wait about a month and a half to get your leather Chesterfield sofa. However, this is certainly a process you don’t want to rush. The workmanship that goes into bespoke furniture is truly amazing, but it does take some time. There are some shops that can finish your sofa faster if you so desire, but sometimes, it’s better just to wait. Keep this time frame in mind when you place your order.

The size of the leather Chesterfield sofa is also something you should consider. The most popular sizes are two and three seaters; however, when you have your sofa custom made, the sky is really the limit. In terms of pricing, you will find that these types of sofas are about the same as high quality leather sofas that you would find in your neighbourhood furniture store. The best thing is that you won’t be seeing your sofa in someone else’s home. It’s your unique personality and inspiration that goes into your new leather Chesterfield sofa.

Finally, if you are having problems deciding exactly what you want your new leather Chesterfield sofa to look like, you can talk with the designers at the bespoke Chesterfield Lounge shop. They will be able to answer all of your questions and give you some guidance, if you need it. Don’t be afraid to use their experience and knowledge. They want their customers satisfied so they will tell others about the gorgeous leather Chesterfield sofas they created! There’s no better marketing than a recommendation from a previous customer!
